Artist Workshop: Figure Drawing Made Easy (Part One)

Have you ever wanted to experience a figure drawing class with a live model but were too intimidated to try? Or are you an experienced artist who's looking for practice and some great tips? In the first of a two-part series, Michael Coughlin, museum educator at The Hyde, provides a clear, easy-to-follow procedure to simplify the figure drawing process. Besides his work at The Hyde, Michael is a drawing and painting professor at Maria College, and he has taught figure drawing at the University of Albany. With his positive reinforcement, he's sure that even novice artists will gain the confidence to learn this enjoyable skill. All materials will be provided with the cost of this workshop. Rugs from Rags with Caroline Dvorak

Fabric remnants will be used to make a 24"x30" rug. Students will have a choice of making a "Sock Rug", using loopers from a sock factory, or making "Shag Rugs" using fringe remnants. No weaving experience is necessary. The looms are dressed and ready to go, all you need to bring is your creative spirit and leave with a finished one-of-a-kind rag rug.

Felted Adirondack Sketches with Robin Blakney-Carlson

Felt is a perfect medium to capture the essence of the Adirondacks that surrounds AFS in a landscape collage. This workshop requires no prior experience, and is intended to uplift your creative spirit! We will combine wool with natural fibers and learn a simple wet felting technique to make our felted "sketches". You will discover the unique felting characteristics of various fibers, and how to use them to their best effect for illustration. This workshop is beginner friendly! NOTE: Students should bring 2 old towels and wear sleeves you can push up to stay dry. A heavy cloth or waterproof apron is helpful too.
