Three years after General Grant's death, a movement was afoot to have his birthday declared a national holiday. On April 27, 1888, a roomful of Grant admirers gathered at the renowned Delmonico's Banquet House in New York City to promote the cause. Those admirers, including former Union and Confederate generals, spoke of their love and respect for Ulysses S. Grant. Transcripts of their speeches have survived and today's Porch Chat is taken directly from those transcripts. Today's talk will be presented by Grant Cottage tour guide Steve Trimm and by his brother, the well-known regional theater actor Tracy Trimm.

Combining historical record with anecdotes from the colorful figures who lived it, Vernon Benjamin presents the definitive book about the area U.S. Congress once called "the landscape that defined America." Beginning with the first Native American communities, through Henry Hudson's Dutch-sponsored voyage up the river later named for him, the American Revolution, the Industrial Revolution and the rapid growth of metropolitan New York, and ending at the close of the Civil War, no previous text has traced the history of the Hudson River Valley in as comprehensive and entertaining a way as Vernon Benjamin's expansive new book.

Her rounded shapes hide mysterious interiors: some hold small clay pieces that rattle inside, while others have poetry written on their inside walls, never to be seen.
