ON THE EDGE, a film by Diane Nilan and Laura Vazquez, follows the stories of seven women as they fall from housing and independence into homelessness. ON THE EDGE takes viewers deep into the nomadic lives of impoverished women and children, providing a demographic representation that reflects the homeless population, and a personal, often painful perspective from women whose uprooted lives tragically make them experts in this growing social issue. The film brings to the forefront the traumatic effects of continual displacement on their children. The film was an official selection of the 2011 Geneva Film Festival and the 2011 Naperville Independent Film Festival. It was also awarded Best of Festival in the 2011 Faculty Documentary Division of the Broadcast Educators Association Film Festival.
Diane Nilan, the film's producer, was the guest speaker at WAIT House's 2010 fundraiser "Your Help Carries WAIT. She is the founder and president of HEAR US Inc. has over 25 years' experience working with impoverished and homeless families. In 2005, Nilan formed a national non-profit organization, HEAR US Inc., to call attention to the hidden issue of homeless families and youth. Nilan, in her RV/office known as "Tillie", continues her cross country journeys to non-urban communities to chronicle poverty and homelessness, particularly for invisible families and teens, conducting trainings, developing grass-roots advocacy support and filming for future projects.
