Historic Union Cemetery is the resting place of many 19th and 20th Century community leaders of Fort Edward and Sandy Hill. A stroll through the cemetery reveals many families whose names are still visible in the area on streets, buildings, parks, businesses, etc.
Just inside the main gate are the graves of Jane McCrea, Sarah McNeil and Major Duncan Campbell. Major Campbell died of wounds received at Fort Ticonderoga in 1758. During the Revolutionary War Jane McCrea was brutally massacred in 1777. Sarah McNeil was accompanying Jane on her journey at the time of her murder.
In the section to the right of Jane McCrea's gravesite is an obelisk, which appears to be broken. This monument marks the grave of William Lee, Chancellor and Chief Justice of the Hawaiian Nation. Mr. Lee died in Honolulu, Sandwich Islands, in 1867 at age 36. His body was shipped to the mainland for burial. The obelisk was designed to appear broken indicating a life cut short.
Many verterans are buried throughout the Cemetery. Across from the Soldier's Monument is a burial lot containing the remains of many area Civil War soldiers and veterans. The cemetery is the final resting place for many veterans from the Revolutionary War to the Vietnam War.
