North Creek NY

North Creek is a hamlet in Johnsburg. It was to North Creek Station on the historical Adirondack Railway that Vice President Theodore Roosevelt traveled to in 1901, upon hearing about the death of President William McKinley, making Roosevelt the 26th US President.

The area is also well-known for its skiing, particularly because of its proximity to Gore Mountain. Don't let the name scare you - Gore was not named after the R-rated movie stuff, but instead after a surveyor's term which refers to an uncharted bit of land. Gore Mountain was never surveyed because it was useless to farmers and loggers, since it was too steep (making it perfect for skiing!).

Many new local businesses, including the world-reputed Barkeater's Chocolates, are unique to the region and give North Creek its special (slightly chocolatey) flavor.
