Switching Hands

This course is offered for people who are experiencing difficulty using their dominant hand due to age, illness or accident. It may also appeal to anyone wanting to be ambidextrous. The concept stresses spatial relationship on a broader scale rather than printing or cursive writing, making progress easier and more rapidly achieved. The method uses observational drawing with measurement and contour relationships to translate simple objects onto paper with a charcoal stick.The instructor, Tom O'Brien, is a professional artist and sculptor who has developed problems with his dominant hand and therefore trained his left hand to become proficient in everyday tasks.

All-Grain Beer Brewing

Wednesday, 6:30 to 8:30pm at the Wilton Center & Saturday, 9am to 3pm at Saratoga Zymurgist. This hands-on class is designed for the home brewer who would like to learn the world of all-grain brewing. Find out how working with grains will improve your beer making abilities. You will learn the benefits of doing a yeast starter, as well as how to ferment with lager yeast. Recipe formulation and how to calculate your efficiency will also be taught. You'll learn the specifics on how to brew an all-grain brew in the first class, and then you'll take that knowledge and brew on Saturday. After a fermenting time of 3-4 weeks, you will be invited back for bottling and take home a sample of the brew. Students must be 21 years of age to enroll in this class. Please bring your government- issued photo ID with you to the first class. This is an intermediate brewing class, so you should have some experience in home brewing. Please plan on bringing a lunch for Saturday's class. Pre-registration through SUNY Adirondack Continuing Education is required.

Long Time Courting in Concert

All-Woman band Long Time Courting brings their unique Celtic Roots sound to the Crandall Public Library Live! Folklife Concerts Join Boston-based quartet Long Time Courting for an evening of traditional and original music with evocative vocal harmonies and powerful instrumentals. The show takes place on Thursday October 16, 2014 at the Crandall Public Library in Glens Falls. The show begins at 7:00 pm and tickets are FREE. Long Time Courting is an all-women supergroup featuring Shannon Heaton (flute, accordion, vocals) of Matt & Shannon Heaton and Childsplay, Liz Simmons (guitar, vocals) of Annalivia and the John Whelan Band, Valerie Thompson (cello, vocals) of Laura Cortese's Acoustic Project and Fluttr Effect, and Katie McNally (fiddle, vocals), also of Childsplay. Together as Long Time Courting, these four talented woman offer an extraordinary blend of neo-traditional Irish, Scottish and American music that showcases each musician's versatility, creativity, and mastery. Exquisite vocal harmonies combine with formidable instrumental prowess to create music that is both playful and richly satisfying. The members of the group are all seasoned performers, having toured with such notable acts as The John Whelan Band, Childsplay, Robbie O'Connell, Aoife Clancy, Laura Cortese's Acoustic Project, and Carlos Núñez. Flute player Shannon Heaton, a Chicago native, is well known for her work alongside her husband Matt Heaton, with whom she has spent the last ten years recording, performing, and touring on several continents. Irish American News dubbed her 2009 Female Musician of the Year, and LiveIreland called her latest album with Matt Heaton the "Trad Fusion Album of 2010." New Hampshire-ite and guitarist Liz Simmons is best known for her work with the Celtic Americana outfit Annalivia which she co-founded with husband Flynn Cohen. She also performs with the acclaimed Irish accordionist John Whelan, and her singing is featured in the film "Time and Charges" written and directed by Academy Award winner Ernest Thompson. Cellist Valerie Thompson hails from Kansas City and is an innovator of the folk and rock cello, as well as being a studied classical player. She is a graduate of the Berklee College of Music with a masters' degree from the New England Conservatory. Valerie can also be heard with Laura Cortese's Acoustic Project. Katie McNally is a New England Scottish fiddle champion and two-time runner up for the national title. She is a graduate of Tufts University where she studied traditional music from many cultures (including a semester in Scotland) and performs with the supergroup Childsplay as well as her own solo project. This past year she could also be seen touring with famed Galician piper Carlos Núñez.

Post Star Holiday Parade

The Annual Post Star Holiday Parade will take place on the Sunday before Thanksgiving, November 23, 2014. Maintaining the tradition of being held the Sunday before Thanksgiving, the parade will begin at 1:00 p.m. and will travel north on Route 9, starting at Carriage Traders and King Pin's Alley Family Fun Center through the village of South Glens Falls. The parade will showcase more than 110 entries which include community groups, bands, floats, marchers and costumed characters. The event concludes with a special guest, Santa Claus!
